Natural Resource Management

Overview

The CSIRO and CRC for Sustainable Sugar production are working with partner projects funded by SRDC, LWRRDC and CSIRO to support the sugar industry in the Herbert and Sunshine Coast regions to work in partnership with State, Local Government agencies and local community groups (particularly ICM) to develop and implement a planning systems approach to rural land use planning in the sugar industry.

It will assist the sugar industry, other relevant stakeholders and land managers in both regions to: enhance their rural land use planning capacity; prepare for, and undertake negotiations with other relevant stakeholders to establish and implement agreed catchment and regional priorities and rural land resource management strategies; identify and implement rural land use strategies and plans over which they have responsibility as well as strategies and plans that require negotiated solutions with other stakeholders in sugar catchments; develop and implement innovative ways to involve the industry and other catchment stakeholders in the process of planning to meet their catchment and regional land use planning responsibilities and objectives.

In the two focus regions, a series of facilitated planning workshops and resource use futures for (forums), are used to provide stakeholders with the opportunity to identify their key development issues, their objectives and strategies for the region's economy and natural resources. The for assist stakeholders to identify common strategies and objectives. They also provide an opportunity to explore alternatives, and a way to choose effective, equitable and sustainable courses of action. The aim of this process of planning workshops and fora is to establish an agreement to continue negotiations on agreed strategies.

NRM Tools
NRM Tools is a web-based decision support system designed to help you to explore issues and options in integrated natural resource management. The data and tools provided within the current version are focused on integrated resource use issues in the Herbert River catchment of North Queensland. All of the data and models that we are developing are currently available for public access.

The Herbert River Catchment Atlas
The coastal zone of Australia is a major focus of competition between alternative uses of resources which pose serious threats to its future economic, environmental, social and cultural potential. The Herbert River catchment is typical of a large number of catchments that impact on the coastal zone.

To facilitate the sustainable management of a catchment, a detailed knowledge of the natural resources and the impact of human activity on these resources is essential. Improved management practices and policy initiatives must also be developed if the dual goals of sustainable production and environmental conservation are to be addressed. This atlas details the natural resources of the Herbert River catchment and in doing so it assists in the sustainable management of the catchment.

Stakeholder Information
As part of the planning process, facilitators are trying to improve the communication flow between key stakeholders and organisations within the region. To assist this process the facilitators have established a database of key stakeholders and organisations. The information within this system is not complete and is an evolving environment. a
