Tyto is a 90 hectare wetland site located in close proximity to the township of Ingham. The wetlands are also less than a kilometre from the Bruce Highway. The wetland integrates lagoons, interpretive signs, lookouts and hides, to entice visitors to spend more time at Tyto. The extensive walking tracks throughout the wetlands allow visitors the unique opportunity to view wildlife closely without interference or disturbance to wildlife and their habitats. The name of the wetland comes from the endangered eastern Grass Owl (Tyto Capensis). The observation deck allows visitors a chance to see the Grass Owl as it flies out at dusk. Visitors also have the opportunity to to see the Osprey nest site. |

How to Get There Vehicles approaching Ingham from the south along Townsville Road should turn left down Cooper Street and park in the carpark on the right hand side at the end of the street. From here a walking track passes to the left of the Brothers Club and continues on to the wetland. History Tyto Wetlands original aim was to restore and preserve an existing degraded wetland. The restoration work involved the eradication and control of introduced weed and tree species such as parragrass, hymenachne, lantana, guava and african tulip. The replanting of naturally occurring vegetation took place as well as the re-establishment of permanent lagoons. The project now aims to conserve an ecosystem for species of wildlife such as grass owls and crimson finches, as well as provide an educational resource for the community in promoting an environmentally significant link between rural and urban communities.
