If the hot summer days have taken their toll and you're keen for a dip to cool down, you'll have no trouble finding a place to have a swim in Hinchinbrook.
Head to any one of our three main beaches - Forrest Beach, Taylors Beach or Lucinda for a paddle in the salt water, perhaps followed by a sunset barbeque on the foreshore. All beaches have excellent facilities and are popular with the locals, especially during our summer season. One thing to be mindful of though - 'stingers' (jellyfish) frequent the Hinchinbrook waters during the warmer months of the year, especially from November through to March. This period of time is commonly referred to as the 'Stinger Season'. During this time, protective nets are installed at each of the three beaches to enable safe swimming. To reduce the risk of stings even further it is advisable to wear a lycra sun protection suit. People are warned that swimming outside of these nets could result in life-threatening stings. Information on the dangers of stingers, and the procedures for emergency treatment in the event of a jellyfish sting are in prominent locations at all beaches.
If fresh water is more your scene, there are many swimming holes in the Hinchinbrook region in which to cool down. Some of the more popular locations include Wallaman Falls, Broadwater State Forest, Jourama Falls, Crystal Creek (Paluma), Five Mile Swimming Hole, and Zoe Bay and Mulligan Bay on Hinchinbrook Island. These provide for safe swimming all year round, and are all located in National Parks or State Forests, most with toilet and barbeque facilities. There are many other popular swimming holes, but a majority of these are located on private land, and prior arrangement must be made with the landowner.
